Once someone is aware of grave abuses like those revealed in the Epstein files, deliberately refusing to care or to form any judgment is itself a moral choice. In a decent society, we do not treat such abuse as a neutral matter; we recognise it as wrong and, at minimum, refuse to collude in minimising it. While not everyone must speak publicly, a wilful refusal to engage even when asked tends to function, in practice, as a form of abdication and helps create a climate in which such wrongs are more easily ignored.
I get what you're saying, Lawerence, and thanks for the comment. That said, as I pointed out, there is a vast chasm between empathy and anxiety. And I don't see it as neutral. I think it is awful what happened to those girls, and I think anyone involved should be prosecuted if the evidence exists or if the statute of limitations has passed, shut out of polite society. My position is that not caring means I do not have to indulge in the daily cycle that comes out, and take part in the public, political fights that have dominated since their release. Not caring means I won't become emotionally invested in it.
